STN LogoOnline Questions? STN has the answers!

Student Television Network is the nation’s largest scholastic broadcasting network.

We are always looking for ways to support video production in the classroom.  Our network works with professionals in the industry to share their expertise with teachers and students.  We do this via our annual convention, in newsletters and in our online listserv.

STN Conference

Our online listserv is used daily by hundreds of teachers who have questions from the simplest to the most complex.  Some have called it “ROBUST” while others have cried wolf for almost too much information.  No matter what your reaction, as a member of STN, you will have answers within minutes from all across the country.

Recently, the subject of copyright has been front and center on the STN listserv.  As teachers, you want to impart correct, up-to-the-minute information to your students.  But, like anything associated with the law, rules change over time and interpretation is open to each specific instance.  Some teachers have chosen to err on the side of caution and some take chances in order to make the best material available to their students.  Either way, the listserv includes discussions about the differences between using materials in student videos that are confined to educational purposes versus using materials in a professional context where strict law presides.

Another hot topic on the STN listserv is the choice of editing platforms and the many options for hardware and software.  STN has support from Adobe, Apple and AVID and we have lively conversations about which is the best for the many different systems used by our affiliates.  Regardless of the platform and equipment used, you will find answers to the most complicated questions as well as the famous line, “just turn the computer off and restart.”

STN Crew

Teachers on the STN listserv also talk about what it’s like to be a broadcasting teacher when the rest of the teachers in the school are aligned by subject or department.  Many of our teachers are islands in their discipline and they like the camaraderie of the listserv for advice and support.

In addition to the listserv, our affiliates can attend our annual convention where they meet other teachers from across the country, learn from professionals in the industry, connect with their students on a new level and go home with a new appreciation for their craft.  STN Convention 2009 will be held March 18-21 in Orlando, Florida.  More information is available on our website.

So, if you’re looking for answers, alliances and a few good friends who understand when you say things like “capture the video,” we invite you to check out Student Television Network at
