More than ever, experience in video production is a valuable asset for young aspiring multimedia professionals to have when they graduate from college, and the Patriot League is making it happen.
Over the last three years, the Patriot League Network (PLN) has provided students from all 10 of its member institutions the opportunity to gain professional experience in video production, from videography to graphics to directing to producing.
Working with its digital partner Campus Insiders, the PLN streamed nearly 1,000 live events last year including 11 championship games. Each school in the Patriot League produces live content for the PLN, recruiting students to fill out their production crews.
Through exclusive enhanced events produced by Campus Insiders, students also get the opportunity to shadow and learn from professionals in the field.
“The PLN provides extraordinary value to students who are interested in sports video production,” said Jamie Reynolds, the director of video and network production at Holy Cross. “We do not free-lance any positions within our broadcasts, so students are able to get hands on experience doing many aspects of gameday production, including running cameras, graphics and audio.”
“At Boston University we believe in empowering our students to become successful leaders,” said Leo Pare, the senior staff assistant for marketing communications at Boston U. “Providing students with hands-on training and experience certainly helps our productions, but more importantly students have used what they learned to secure jobs in the sports video industry after they graduate BU.”
Opportunities to work with the PLN are not solely limited to students on campus as schools look to utilize the help of students from local colleges and high schools.
The PLN, powered by Campus Insiders, is available throughout the world online at www.patriotleague.tv, as well as on several over the top devices (as Amazon Fire, Apple TV, Roku, Xbox and go90).
Campus Insiders is the fastest growing, most engaged destination for college sports fans, bringing them the latest news, live coverage, and most innovative and unique stories from college conferences across the country, with high-quality content including live studio shows, video-on-demand and more than 3,000 live games and events.
The Patriot League, comprised of American, Army West Point, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola University Maryland and Navy, was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class.
Their successes in the classroom and in athletic competition are highlighted daily on the PLN, and it’s all made possible through the help of young multimedia professionals at each school.
Prospective Patriot League students who have an interest in sports and multimedia are encouraged to contact the sports information department on campus to start their journey toward a great hands-on education that will set them up for future success in the field of multimedia.
There are numerous opportunities for student workers, primarily in behind-the–camera roles, such as producer, camera operator or graphics, within PLN productions. Occasionally, announcer duties could arise, however, many of the Patriot League schools utilize their radio announcers for the live productions. If you just get the chance to observe the production, you will gain value experience for future broadcasts.
